WHAT IS ARTISTS STUDIO TOURS BARBADOS (ASTB)?
On two weekends in February and March, participating ASTB artists open their studios or exhibitions space to the public for “show and tell”, and potentially, sales. Art lovers, both local and international, are provided with an informative brochure of the event (including a map to all the studios) in order to visit the studios independently and to interact with the artist. The open studios are a great way for artists to become known in their community and further afield. The goal of ASTB is to show exciting, diverse artwork to inspire appreciation and recognition of Barbadian art and craft. By opening studios to the public, ASTB provides an opportunity for direct sales (no commission fees), education and enjoyment.
Artists work all year round and would be delighted to hear from you anytime, not just on open studio days.
If you see something you like, if you’d like to commission a piece — don’t hesitate to contact the artist.

I am inspired by nature and people. I have always had a love for the human form and the beauty of nature. I discovered along my journey, that I also really enjoy doing realistic portraits, both of people and animals. I work with acrylic and mixed media and love experimenting with techniques. I also enjoy teaching art to all age groups.
I have won several awards for my work which is scattered around the world in private collections. There is great joy in producing art that helps to uplift and inspire people.

Forensic Scientist, Visual Artist & Writer, Cher-Antoinette is multi-faceted and commenced her artistic journey in 2014 where she decided to let her work speak to her life. A self-taught emerging artist from Barbados her artwork is diverse and quite different to that on the local scene.
Cher-Antoinette’s Studio was opened in August 2017 and showcases the artist's belief in “The Synergy of Life & Art!”. Her media and style of choice are Alcohol Inks, Watercolour, Acrylics, Acrylic Fluid Art and Mixed Media expressions. Most recently she has ventured into Modern Pointillism and Hard-Edge Abstract Art as well as using her fluid art in the creation of functional art.
The studio is also the home of C-Toi Wearable Art, a jewelry line that showcases her Acrylic Fluid Art. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and brings art to the average person in an affordable form. The pieces are also enhanced with healing crystals such as amethyst, hematite and back onyx.
The love of science drew the artist to acrylic fluid art as this medium truly expresses the chemical and physical interactions of the paint. Over the years Cher has developed techniques using substitute chemicals and paints as availability of commonly used materials proved to be difficult to acquire or just prohibitive in price. The resulting unique images can be seen in the collection FlowArtistry by Cher.
Cher-Antoinette is a nationally awarded visual artist, writer and poet.

I have enjoyed art from a young age, after leaving school I joined a class with Indrani Whittingham learning to paint with oils. In 2003 I travelled to London to study interior and landscape design.
Upon returning home to Barbados, I joined the team at Nature Care in 2006 and worked designing and coordinating landscape projects in St. Lucia, Mustique, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In 2018 I took over as supervisor of sales and marketing in our Garden Centre.
In 2017 I decided to dust off my brushes and try my hand at acrylics, for the first time since leaving school. I dabbled during the coming years, and along came the Artist Studio Tours 2023. I visited as many studios as I could, and spoke with as many artists as I could. I was left feeling inspired by the talent of our amazing local artists. During one of my tours, I connected with Tracey Williams and soon thereafter I began an evening class to learn everything I could about the various acrylic mediums and developing my technique. I'm inspired by scenes in nature and landscapes. It has been a wonderful journey with incredible encouragement from fellow artists Sian, Reggie and Tracey.

I am a self-taught artist from Canada, living in Barbados since 2017. I use art as a medium for storytelling, and my artwork has continually evolved through the different chapters of my life. Influenced by the nature around us, I use painting as an outlet for creativity, balancing my professional life as an accountant.
Creativity is my true passion and I have progressed from my first attempt at painting in 2013 where I painted a variety of subjects, but my favourite was trees and trees of life. Now I incorporate inspiration from our beautiful island, and I only create visual arts that have a link to the natural world.
I have expanded my experience in acrylic paintings to other mediums including oils, watercolours, alcohol inks and some mini clay pieces. I also can draw but prefer the bold colour effects from paint. I have exhibited at a variety of galleries in the Canadian prairies as well as Barbados.
Furthermore, I used to teach acrylic painting classes to art beginners in rural communities in Canada with class size from small to over 30 people. This was a very unique experience to be able to pass along the skills I have learnt along the way and that I am passionate about.
Now my focus is my branded artworks, Art n Lifestyle, where I create a variety of handmade artworks that can be found online and at local markets. From my paintings I create printed products that I assemble, where I have learnt how to sew and some basic book binding techniques for an accessories and stationery collection.
I continue to keep following my creative spirit and am emerging with new ideas as I have time to bring them to life!

I studied Printmaking and Mural Design at Walthamstow school of art and then Painting for three years, at the Royal College of Art, before arriving in Barbados in 1971. I have painted and drawn all over Barbados mostly in the central area, and in the interior of Guyana and Georgetown. I started by looking at the Royal Palm and quickly discovered the wild natural Gullies where the palms grew. My works are usually large, and done with small brushes and acrylic paint. Occasionally I use collage of many different materials to change the flatness of acrylics, but on the whole I am not an experimental artist. Although done from fragments of drawings, colour sketches, and from ideas seen in nature the actual paintings are compiled at home, resembling a real place, but they don’t exist, you can’t visit.
For seven years, I wrote a weekly art column in the Sunday Sun newspaper called Galleria. It consisted of a short critique of current shows in Barbados, told of important shows abroad , comments on the built and natural environment, and events . Art in its widest sense was included, jewelry, basketry, video, photography, fashion and craft of all sorts. My last one person shows were Big Gully Pond at Brighton store room in 2021, and in 2018 at Queens Park Gallery, called The Land. It featured the Mark Hunte Bequest (he had bought a lot of paintings of mine in the 1980s) and other works were added, becoming a mini retrospective.

Christopher Chandler is a well known self taught Barbadian Artist whose career spans a period of over thirty-five years. His humble beginnings as an artist began way back in 1987, growing out of his love for recreating beauty out of waste and recycled material, as he sees purpose and beauty in everything. Chris’s interest in recycling , environmental awareness and preservation started at a very young age and were his earliest influences in relation to his art work. His first line of inquiry led to the development of a local art form he coined as “Recycle-Art”, sourcing inks, foam, rubber and various components from the waste of local manufacturing industries and individuals, and other materials both natural and man made to create these multimedia three-dimensional carved pieces of art work. His subject matter is similarly informed by his love for nature, choosing representations of birds and ocean life displayed in informative collections. Barbadian folklore also made its’ way into his work, and his work has gained him both local and international acclaim and opportunities.
Chris ‘s work has evolved dramatically over the years, always being keen to try something new, it moved into areas of large scale mural production with work commissioned by several companies and entities mostly in Barbados but also the United Kingdom and Toronto, installations for hotels and restaurants, woodwork and finally terminating in one or his favorite areas , giant carved painted limestone sculptures, which hug the walls of some note worthy locations in Barbados, utilizing an Indiegenous technique he developed called “skin-back” technique. Most notably, the famous Parris Hill ”Lion and the Mouse” has enjoyed the attention and coverage it has received both locally and internationally, gracing the real and virtual pages of many magazines, bloggers and even photographers.
Despite his humble nature, Chris’ accomplishments are many, but to just name a few he has received several National Independence Festival Awards, Enviromental and Conservation Awards , multiple solo exhibitions, and others he would have curated and invited fellow artist to participate. Chris was invited to develop a gallery at “ The Old Edge Water Hotel”, travelled to Toronto as the sole artist representing Barbados at The Harbor Front to produce an exhibition and a mural on canvas for a children’s hospital there. Chris’ work graces the walls of homes, business houses, museums both locally and throughout the world.
One of Chris special moments was the recent invitation by The Government of Egypt to travel to Sharm-El-Sheikh as a specially invited guest artist to produce a work of art to be included in an international memorial at the base of the Sinai mountains as a part of “World Youth Form” entitled “Reviving Humanity.”
In spite of the opportunities further a field Chris heart and roots remain tied to Barbados and he recently opened his own home-based studio for the production of small to medium sized works of art. Also tied to the studio is “The Saga Gully” sculpture park with its painted trees and painted sculptures exhibition and tour, which features over 30 indigenous pieces of work and an educational experience of local nature and gully ecosystems. Chris repertoire is diverse and he continues to practice, to be open to revisiting the old and exploring the new, all the while painting his and this world with color and carving it with sculpture.

Kris Choy (née Wilkins) was born in Guyana , South America where she studied art to Advanced level at school. She moved to Barbados in 1980 where she raised her daughter and began painting during an “empty nest” syndrome . From there she developed her art by participating in workshops in USA and Barbados , learning skills in pastels, oil paints, “plein air” painting, as well as collage techniques and watercolours and encaustics (which is painting with wax of different colors).
This affords her the opportunity to paint outdoors and savour the nuances of the landscape and the swift changes of light and weather conditions. More recently, she found acrylics and fell in love with the versatility of the medium .
She feels it is important to record places as they are now, since in this rapidly changing world, the future generations will see how beautiful their world was before all the construction and industry.
Her body of work includes landscape, figurative, portraiture and Impressionism.
She has displayed her work at Festival art shows , and galleries in Barbados.
Kris’s work is held in many private collections in different parts of the world.

I am a Barbadian born in Jamaica to a Jamaican mother and a Barbadian father. I started my artistic training locally at Queens College and then moved on to achieve a degree in Textile Design at the University of Brighton in the UK.
For many years I was self employed as a printed textile designer for the US swimwear market. Having spent that time being constrained to a strict design format I shrugged off that title and got busy discovering a more whimsical style, painting anything I wanted to, including numerous very-still-lifes during lockdown, a snowcone cart, a surfboard, 2 lifesized fiberglass cows, 2 mini-buses and a portrait of a garden in France.
Recently I’ve gotten obsessed with collecting vintage ceramic shards that I find in the very dirt of Barbados while walking all over the island. I have these broken bits of the past and created brand new artwork that’s also already 200 years old.

A Bajan born artist, I worked in advertising for 22 years where my days were spent mainly editing and proofreading the many magazines, booklets and advertisement produced, or assisting a photographer on photoshoots.
Although growing up I never thought of art as a career option, there were a few moments in my younger life that hinted I might one day be where I am today. As a child, I enjoyed art and at age seven, won a NIFCA award for a collage I produced while attending the St Gabriel's School. Also, at Foundation school, a reproduction of my art was selected to create a large collage which was displayed in the school auditorium for a few years. Continuing my education as an AFS exchange student in Wisconsin, I studied commercial art during the year and helped backstage on set design for the school’s theatre production. That, however, ended my adventures in art for the next 31 years.
In 2015, with my two 'artsy' children finally old enough to fend for themselves, and lots of art supplies lying around my home, I decided to try my hand at painting and discovered a new love for it.
Art, to me, is a means of relaxation and stress relief. I like to immerse myself in painting for hours, freeing my mind of everything but what is in front of me.
When not painting, I like to be outdoors, hiking on the east coast of the island, therefore much of my art is focused on this landscape.
Other than painting and hiking I also enjoy writing and, so far, have published one novel.

I was born on the Island of Trinidad, I grew up in a family where being creative was a way of life. My Uncle was a very successful Architect and Artist, my Aunt an Artist and a cousin a talented designer of Carnival costumes, so from a very young age I have loved vibrant colors and movement, and finding different ways to be creative. I did art at school but I am basically a self taught artist. I have exhibited in quite a few group exhibitions and my work can be found in private collections both here and abroad.
My work is a constant search for the best way to interpret the ideas that I have about myself, our culture and the beauty and colors of the island Barbados where I now live and paint. I do not limit myself to any one medium or concept, and I try take advantage of as many workshops as I can to learn different techniques to be able to make my art more pleasing to my heart.. Each piece I create is both an extension of my past and where I have come from blended with a preview of where I want to go. I work mainly in Acrylics, but have worked in Oils, wax resist, encaustic and resin.
My ultimate desire is for the person standing and looking at one of my pieces to feel the same joy and happiness that I felt in creating the piece.

The artist in me was born on my eighth Christmas when I got the gift I was praying for all year—a shiny, new, watercolor paint set.
Now I could roam the trails and fields of our neighborhood with sketchpad and paints in hand, stopping to capture anything that caught my eye—fruit hanging from trees, birds in flight, and the cavorting of the neighbourhood sheep and goats.
My talent was raw, and friends jokingly called my paintings “abstract,” but my high school art teacher saw potential in me and took me under her wing. She taught me how to paint, using colour to express feeling and create mood. She was Alison Chapman-Andrews, the well-known Barbadian painter, my first mentor, and someone who still inspires me today.
My landscapes are inspired by the rugged cliffs of Ragged Point, the majestic dunes of Chalky Mount and the churning waves of Shark Hole. As a member of Plein Air Barbados (a group of amateur and professional artists), I have the pleasure of discovering these and similar places, and experiencing a oneness with nature which I seek to express in my art.
I’m an acrylic artist, choosing acrylics for their appearance and versatility. I usually start a canvas by underpainting, using a first coat of monochrome colour to sketch the composition. This allows me to position the highlights, reflections and shadows before the top colours are blended and applied. This creates an appearance of depth not easily attained otherwise.
Since discovering my passion many years ago, I’ve been constantly trying new techniques. Consequently, I’ll be experimenting with splattering, pouring and stippling methods in the near future, hoping to achieve innovative effects which I’ll showcase in upcoming works.
It is my pleasure to share my gift with you. I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoy creating it.

Julianne Gill is a visual artist and interior designer whose Barbadian parents raised her in Australia. There she studied fine arts for a year at Curtin University, then switched to interior design and decoration at TAFE.
During a trip to visit family in Barbados in 2001, she was offered a job with Designers Choice and ended up working there for five years. She was then approached by Archers Hall Design Centre, and began working with them on both commercial and residential properties, most of them high end. In both firms, she was commissioned to paint murals, design furniture and create paintings.
Julianne opened Studio J in 2010, in order to develop a design niche for a contemporary, clean-lined aesthetic with a more individual look, and to focus more energy on painting, which is her passion.
As an experienced designer, she specializes in providing personalized interiors which can incorporate both natural elements and commissioned artworks.
Long accustomed to using acrylics, she now employs additional media such as inks, encaustics and resin to explore colour and geometries. Julianne’s process often involves many layers of pushing the paint on and pulling it back to reveal complex layers and patterns.
Julianne’s work explores the shapes and layers of nature, using plants, the land, sea and even ethereal landscapes as subject matter. It is usually abstract and intuitive. Her modern botanical series is influenced by the vibrancy and colour of island living in Barbados.
Julianne Gill works from her home studio in Apes Hill, St. James, Barbados. She is the mother of two small children, enjoys the challenge of work-life balance.

One-of-a kind pieces that contrast either in texture or colour, beautifully hand-crafted from 100% Bajan clay.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
My interest in pottery first started in April 2002, when my sister gave me a gift of pottery classes which helped to release the stress that came with my hectic work and home life. Truth be told, I have not looked back since. Under the watchful eye of Gloria Chung at the Barbados Community College, I was encouraged to find and release whatever hidden talent I may have. The satisfaction gained from turning raw clay into a work of art, or a functional piece is truly rewarding. I embrace the unpredictable and love to throw on the wheel, but recently I’ve taken to hand-building pieces for a different perspective. I’ve found that merging both methods allows my imagination to truly run wild. Working with contrasts, whether glaze colours or textures, along with my attention to detail gives my pieces that edge! Creating vessels and art pieces offers me more scope to experiment. I endeavour to offer my clients their own ‘one-of-a-kind personal pieces’. This challenges me as an artist to never duplicate my work. Much of my personality appears in my work, so when you acquire an MCG (Michelle’s Clay Gallery) piece, you have a part of me.

Hi, I am Jamila – a ceramic artist. Trained as an Architect, my search for a creative outlet from the daily routine of the office, led me to pottery. The spark was lit in 2018 when I participated in a three-month course at the Forest Row School of Ceramics in East Sussex England, where I discovered the unlimited potential of clay.
My work primarily focuses on the use of the various clays, additions to the clay body and oxide washes, which create visual and tactile variations in the surfaces. This allows for endless exploration of the clay material and the act of making, which together becomes a personal experimentation. I choose the vessel as the form of expression because of its similarity to architecture. The vessel contains space and possesses the “triad” of characteristics found in architecture – commodity, firmness and delight.
I enjoy hand building in an intuitive way and making deep connections with the clay material. The narrative of my work is truth to the material, simplicity and elegance; no two are alike, there are irregular, natural and minimal.

This award winning artist fell in love with the manipulation of fabric at the age of 14. She has since evolved into someone who is constantly seeking new ways to push the limits of her medium.
The surface design techniques she employs Include tie dye, batik, hand painting, three dimensional embroidery, fabric collage, fabric sculpture, applique, reverse applique, embroidery and many more.
This self taught artist is inspired by Barbados’ beautiful landscape and the fragments of our rich African heritage which have survived and frequently expressed these ideas in clothing ,home decor items , wall hangings and sculpture.
She pushes the boundaries of her medium when she crafts pieces for exhibition and therefore makes a point to enter shows held at many of the island's art galleries.

Fine Arts/Photography at the University of Art (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst) in Leipzig and
worked as a freelance photographer and as a photo-editor for a daily newspaper (TAZ) in Berlin,
Germany. About 30 years ago, I made beautiful Barbados my home, and have worked as the art
teacher of the Codrington School, the International School of Barbados, for the last 19 years. During
these years, I have taught students in their Primary years, Middle years and at Diploma level. Many
NIFCA awards were achieved by my students during these years, and a few of my most talented
students became professional and successful artists. I have also run many art workshops and
art-and-craft camps for children, and have created large 3-dimensional artworks (on plywood) for
children to touch (so called Sensory Boards) for the Barbados Children's Development Centre and
Children's Homes to be used in occupational therapy. In the late 90ies I did run with a friend a small
art gallery and art-and-craft-shop in Baystreet, called the Perseverance House of Art. I am the
co-author of the journalistic photo-book Gefuehl und Schaerfe, Fotos fuer die TAZ, Rixdorfer
Verlagsanstalt 1982 (Germany) and the author of Picture Science, Using Digital Photography to Teach
Young Children, Redleaf Press 2007 (USA). My book Picture Science won the prestigious 2007
Directors' Choice Award and the Judges' Selection Award from Early Childhood News (USA). In 2013
I received the ECIS (European Council of International Schools) Award for the Promotion of
International Education.
Over the years, I have participated in several group art exhibitions (such as at my previous own small
art gallery, the Perseverance House of Art in Baystreet, the Waterfront Cafe, and at different fairs and
trade show events at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre). I also participated with my work in many
art and craft markets in Barbados, such as the Holetown Festival, the Oistins Festival, and the Crop
Over art and craft market at Spring Garden.
Now retired from my teaching occupation at the Codrington School, I do have the time to focus even
more on my very own creative endeavors and to actively follow my passion and life-long interest in
Fine Art Photography and Painting. I have loved to draw, paint and take pictures since childhood.
Nowadays, I mostly work with acrylic paints on canvas, but also on paper and/or other surfaces. I do
love to explore the endless opportunities of mixing and combining different media, including the use
of papier mache and the use of natural and/or other found objects. I am also very interested in
Intuitive Painting, as I strongly believe in the healing powers of art. I am an active participant and
member of the Barbados Photographic Society. As a photographer, my work focuses on Landscape
and Portraiture Photography, with a specific interest in Black-and-White Photography. Art is my
Life-Line and I would love to open my small art studio at my home in order to share my work with
other creatives and the public in Barbados.

Painting played a huge role on getting that stuck unexpressed stress out and it brought me back into a feeling of safety and confidence back into my life.
The desire to just be, in nature, in a forest somewhere was what my body and mind craved the most and while i couldn't physically be there in found that i could create that feeling in my own mind and i could bring what was on my mind on to canvas.

With this busy schedule, as well as raising 3 children, I started attending Indrani Whittingham’s Newcomers Art Group in 1991 to make time for myself. She always encouraged us to show our work and to become comfortable selling it as well. Annually she organized an exhibition for each of her students to show 3 paintings. This helped us to gain confidence as artists, although I still have difficulty parting with my pieces. I was quite surprised when the started to be recognized, sold and received many awards as NIFCA Silver and Bronze, Best in show, Best oil painting, Chickmont Foods Calendar Contest.
I have attended workshops with local and visiting artists throughout the years. My medium of choice is oil and my subjects vary including landscapes, portraits, and animals. I presently attend lessons with The Love of Art group with Tracy Williams.
The wall in my house are full of paintings and I am running out of space! My friends say that I have my own art gallery at home.

I started art late in life at age 55 after moving to Barbados from England.
After moving here Life presented me with a lot more free time. After a few art classes I was hooked. For many years Previously I worked in interior design so colour and texture combinations were already part of my world. I create in my spare time and hang a lot of my art pieces in my own and my families homes. I have participated in art exhibitions at The Crane Gallery, Art Splash and The Gallery of Caribbean Art. In the last two years 2020 and 2021 I have won The Sir Trevor Carmichael Prize for Best Amateur Artist after competing annually for 5 years since I started painting. Last year 2021 My art was also chosen by Virgin Atlantic to appear on board there Aircraft in there First Class Digital Gallery, so my art is flying around the world! So cool! I love alcohol ink and it’s ability to move in mysterious ways creating beautiful unique patterns. Recycled Glass is a new product I am currently loving and add to my art when I can. My studio is my happy place, my space to collect and display things I love, create, paint and feel free to do as I please.

Artist Sian Pampellonne captures the essence and souls of humans, animals, and insects with raw emotion and vivid colours, captivating the viewer creating mixed media paintings with acrylics and three dimensional pieces collected.
As an artist I am entirely tactile. Everything becomes immersed in the process. My hands, fingers, any brush large or small, kitchen spatula, tool, even a random piece of cardboard that happens to be near me.
Found objects of glass from shattered windscreens, abandoned Lego blocks, empty shot gun cartridge shells, fabrics, cardboard, beads, buttons and more become a part of the stories I tell.
My art storeroom is filled with these found objects. When I pick something up, I don’t always know what I need it for, but I do know it will eventually be a part of a painting. I have recently been using shotgun shells (which can be seen in ‘In Its Likeness’) and builder’s nails.
At first glance, it may look like I paint portraits of people and creatures, real or imagined but it is more than that for me. I process circumstances, history and feelings by painting subjects against the backdrop of the world that in turn envelops them. Each one of my pieces is about growth and discovery. I ask myself a question and the image that emerges from the feelings is my humanity and emotions responding. For example, “What is the impact of colonialism on today’s society”? Or, “How do I grapple with a failed relationship”? The answers may come in the painting of a girl and her golden halo adorned with spent shotgun shells and nails (‘Your Armour’), while the answer to another may appear as an octopus trying to “let go” while in motion (‘She Found Her Freedom’). The addition of the three dimensional found pieces become an integral fragment of the story.
While my colour palette is composed of red tentacles, yellow and black bees, haunting blue faces, I don’t typically choose these colours ahead of time. My pieces come together while in motion as the muse takes me.
I am the third generation of artists, growing up in a creative space where experimentation and self-expression was a part of daily life. Guided from a young age by my grandfather who encouraged me to express myself using what I found in and around his studio.
At this time my art is becoming more introspective. The finished pieces have a refinement about their paint strokes that was not there before. I’m still painting with the same emotions but I believe I am adding new thought processes and layers to my work which has come with experience.
I hope that my encounters with the world which I put on canvas are thought provoking, and tell a story that pulls the viewer in. My wish for my work is that it has allowed you to stop and think.
Though her recognizable artworks adorn the walls of many local and international collectors, each one is a piece of her story that will never quite be purged from her innately creative spirit. Her art pieces can be viewed on her website and social media pages, in art galleries across the region, and also at her studio located in Barbados (by appointment).

I am a self-taught artist who falls into the style of realism. I am a native of Trinidad, living in Barbados. I have exhibited in four group exhibitions, most recently in “La Terra Trois”, Gallery of Caribbean Art, Barbados, in February 2023. I have won The Carmichael Prize Exhibition 2018, for Best Painting – People’s Choice. His experience involved a certificate in art at High School, painting backdrops for Pantomimes and a year at The University of the West Indies under the tutorage of Artist Omowale Stuart.
Chris loves being outdoors and exploring, thus making landscapes his favorite subject. He loves capturing the beauty of colour in reflections, which we tend to miss, like the purples and pinks in the water reflection of the evening sun on a beach, or the speck of light reflecting from your eye.
Chris mainly paints in oil, but also dabbles in acrylics in his abstract pieces. He plays the guitar and sings in the choir of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Barbados.
He continues to enjoy the wonders of colour and its many values as he goes deeper into his love for painting.

My paintings are vibrant and joyous, a reflection of who I am and my life in the Caribbean.
I’m Margaret Nock Rodriguez ...
a Trini who has chosen to live in sunny Barbados;
a retired interior architect, creative planner, traveller and collector of “treasures”
My Artistic Education
I was interested in art and architecture from young and started my watercolour journey using a dry brush technique enhanced with pen doodles. Participating in many workshops in Barbados and overseas has been valuable opportunities to paint with other artists, share ideas and learn from constructive criticism. As an interior architect I developed excellent planning skills, knowledge of structures and attention to detail, talents which, together with my creativity, have stood me in good stead for mastering this challenging medium.
My Artistic Journey
Meeting Canadian artist Margaret Roseman was the turning point in my watercolour journey. She taught me the value of using artist quality materials; how to manipulate big brushes with lots of water; what “letting it flow” meant; negative painting and the importance of light and white paper. Harry Bryden introduced me to the benefits of glazing. Heidi Berger sparked my creative juices, challenging me to experiment with new techniques and want to paint, paint, paint!
My Artistic Awards and Rewards
I won my first art prize in kindergarten and have been honoured to receive many awards since. Regretfully I wasn’t diligent in recording these notable achievements. My private commissions, landscapes, florals, quaint chattel houses and detailed renderings of prominent buildings are hanging in private collections worldwide. The satisfaction of completing a painting then having someone admire and choose to display my art in their home or office has been the most valuable of rewards in my art career.
My Artistic Life
I am inspired by what I see, how I feel and the zillions of images and ideas spinning in my head. Having creative time is a luxury in my life. Despite the myth that watercolour is the hardest medium to master, for me, painting with watercolours is pure enjoyment - relaxing and full of surprises. When my paintbrush touches the paper, anything can happen. It’s quite exciting learning to accept and even welcome the unexpected.
I retired young due to a degenerative condition, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and I am now considered legally blind. I turned this potential career-ending condition into an opportunity to travel, enjoying a variety of cultural and artistic adventures, over the past few years. These experiences, combined with my shrinking field of vision, have challenged me to experiment with other mediums including acrylics, mixed media, collage, mosaics, and pottery and to embrace my newest passion - teaching. Sharing my love and knowledge of watercolours; encouraging my students to “play” not just paint; seeing them gain confidence developing important foundation skills; and nurturing their creativity to try techniques outside their comfort zone, gives me immense pleasure.
While my Trini “joie de vie” continues to be reflected in my vivid colours, my recent works reflect a less structured, increasingly abstract impressionistic style. With very few active painting years remaining, I strive to keep the rainbows in my imagination vivid and alive in my artworks.

Stephen started carving in Barbados as a teenager. Entirely self-taught he was soon winning awards for his work in mahogany at the National Cultural Foundation’s Crop Over Visual Arts exhibition and their annual NIFCA festival.
After moving to London in 2001 he trained at Camberwell College of Arts and went on to study historic wood carving at the City & Guilds of London Art School.
Stephen has had a varied career, combining tuition with his own studio work. As a tutor he has run classes at London’s Good Life Centre and on the Greek island of Vasiliki for Woodcarvers Greece. He enjoys helping others to learn wood carving just as much as he gets satisfaction producing his own work.
At home in Chancery Lane, Stephen is a keen gardener. He says he is glad to be able to sit carving in the open air instead of holed up in an English workshop! Most of his work is carved from Barbados mahogany and from English oak and lime. Today he is also experimenting with less traditional woods like that of the local neem tree.

Adriana has created useful crafts from newspaper. Over the last few years she has developed her own designs and styles from something which is read and thrown away. “Recycling” is on all our minds these days and out of newspaper she creates place mats - drinks mats - decorative trays - mirror frames - Christmas decorations - covered baskets for fruit - laundry baskets - plus unusual bespoke and designer pieces. She uses acrylic paint and finishes with a lacquer finish to ensure the pieces are totally water resistant. She has become very creative with her finishes - all hand painted some with decoupage, splatter finish also transfers. She is happy to take personalized orders. She sells her work at Holders Market on Sunday mornings and at local fairs.

As a child growing up - drawing and painting was always a favourite past-time and the love of art has continued throughout my life. In recent years I have expanded my artistic interest to learn about different types of printing - screen print, mono print, lithography, Japanese Woodblock at courses made available at Gainsborough House Print Workshop in the UK.
I came to the island in 1965 to join my husband in the hotel business which took up most of my time. In those early days in my spare time, I continued to enjoy painting with Norma Talma and Angela Davies. More recently I have attended many of Heidi Berger’s classes and experimented with other techniques - mixed media, wax resist, encaustic medium, pastels among others.
Barbados plays on the senses. The amazing island colours, sounds and flavours had an immediate effect on me from the time I arrived in the island and has influenced my artistic style and colour palette.
Originally I painted with water colour or oil paint but these days, for convenience my preferred medium is acrylic and I have painted many interesting local scenes.
I’ve also developed a love of the wax resist method and have completed a series of ‘named’ fishing boats, pulled up on the beach at Six Men’s Bay, in addition to my “Turtle Life” Series.
Now semi-retired it allows me more time to paint, particularly during the isolation and lock-down time during the Coronavirus pandemic.
A member of the Barbados Arts Council I enjoy getting involved with the many art activities participating in Artists Alliance Barbados and Treasurer of Art Studio Tours Barbados. My work has been shown in many galleries and exhibitions on the island.

Dana was always what you’d call artistically inclined. Her earliest memory from the age of three is studying the way weed grass swayed in the wind or the way a wood dove cooed. Her mother encouraged her to dance freely in front of crowds or make-believe other worlds out in the garden while her father taught her about trees and adventure. She eventually went on to pursue her first love and study Fine Art at university, and subsequently obtained her teaching degree.
She gave priority to teaching for some years and had two beautiful children along the way, but a professional painting career always beckoned, patiently waiting its turn, simmering and maturing.
She begins her process with a photo, preferring to use ones she’s taken herself. Her favourite medium is oil paint that is thick and versatile. She always starts with an undercoat which gives a unifiying effect to the painting. Even if most is painted over, she likes how little bits of that first colour sometimes peak out at the end.
For subject matter she still enjoys finding the unusual views and perspectives she was drawn to as a child, the overlooked, or the underappreciated, and making them beautiful. By doing so she can give these things a voice and then share that voice with her viewers. Her favourite subjects are weeds, trees and old buildings.

My love of outdoor painting serves as a vehicle to propel my artistic interest and enthusiasm for the visual arts. Visiting various landscapes throughout the island-from River Bay in St Lucy in the north to Nelson Street in the city capital of Bridgetown ~ has allowed me to come into my own expressionistic style. My portfolio contains seascapes, wildflower super-blooms, turtles and my signature “Bodega Series” of still-lifes which depict ingredients for favourite recipes.
Born and raised in Barbados, I have been keen on art from my days at The Christ Church Foundation School. I then pursued Fine Arts at The Barbados Community College; after which, I studied Interior Design at the International Fine Arts College in Miami, Florida. In 2015, a deep interest in visual arts began to blossom and then flourish when I attended the National Cultural Foundation’s En Plein Air Workshops which were tutored by Barbadian master artists.

The collections include bowls, platters, plates and charcuterie boards and are crafted exclusively from found and fallen timber. Each piece is unique, food safe for functional daily use and sophisticated in design. Working by hand enables Ashanti to draw out the natural grain of the wood and finish each piece to smooth perfection.
The bespoke collection include bowls incorporating other media such as epoxy, leather and wire, that are stunning center-pieces, showcasing master craftmanship in design, color and texture of especially mahogany wood, which will stand the test of time as favorite creations and exclusive work of art.

Yasmin Vizcarrondo was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1958. Barbados became her home since 1998.She received an early introduction into the world of art by her late grandfather, a German immigrant, with a rich artistic inclination. She remembers seeing him painting daily, he took her to paint outdoors, and to the city’s galleries. The many moments spent together have definitely influenced Yasmin’s artwork. Here in Barbados, her painting has transformed from something casual to a way of life. This island has motivated and inspired Yasmin in unimaginable ways. In 2009, she joined Indrani Whittingham’s art group sessions. This started her “re-encounter” with art, it created an explosion in her senses, perceiving more vividly the extraordinary colors and images of the Caribbean. She uses oils and acrylics , loose brush strokes and palette knife, portraying her unique painterly and impressionistic style.Plein air is her favorite way of painting, something she has inherited from her grandfather, who loved the outdoors and who never painted from photographs. Her first Solo exhibition, called “Loving Barbados “, was in 2014. This first exhibition was dedicated to the memory of her granddad, Hugo Matthes, who loved and painted Barbados too.

My paintings are a reflection of the environment surrounding me so therefore my art represents everything that I see, feel and experience. My aim in painting my subjects is to capture the beauty of the moment. I enjoy painting the everyday things, the things we miss or don't take notice of, yet, the familiar things that should give us pleasure. Therefore, my aim is for the viewer to experience, get lost, and be moved by that moment. I believe that it's in these small details that we get a glimpse of the Creator.
I prefer working with acrylic paints but sometimes use other mediums like wax resist. Iʼve recently been captivated by different textures and have been experimenting with various acrylic mediums and organic objects to achieve the desired effect I want. I'm also using my palette knife more as it not only gives the desired texture to my paintings but the feathery like results are most desirous for moving figures, and gives that Impressionist effect to some of my paintings. This quote by Pierre- Auguste Renoir sums up my feelings about my art.
“The magic of the sun transmutes the palm trees into gold, the water seems full of diamonds and men become the kings from the East.” Pierre - Auguste Renoir

Laura Ward was born in Venezuela, a fascinating place where ancient Arawak artisans left behind traces of their existence. My work has been a journey since I encountered the clay for the first time in my life, and I fell in love with the Amerindian Pots. The process of creation is very intimate in the life of an artist - part of the inspiration offered by a vessel and the landscape that surrounds me. Creating my work begins with the modelling of a vessel, followed by the application of different techniques such as impressing, incising, inlay, burnish, paint with metal oxides and firing in an electric kiln, using a cone 5 for a period of nine hours, in which the God of fire performs his magical work transforming the pieces into work of art. She migrated to Barbados in 1991 and has since become known there for her Amerindian-style ceramics. In addition to creating one-of-a-kind pieces, she also manufactures lines of ceramics products at Earth and Fire Studio which she founded in 1994. Each of these pieces is made with love and dedication and depicts Barbadian architecture and culture.
