I am a Barbadian artist and have enjoyed art and crafts from an early age.   This connection with art influenced my choice of career.

In 2003 I travelled to London to study interior and landscape design. Upon returning home to Barbados in 2006, I joined the team at Nature Care designing and coordinating landscape projects in St. Lucia, Mustique, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, transitioning in 2018 to sales and marketing supervisor of the Garden Centre.

In 2017 I dusted off my brushes and tried my hand at acrylics.  I dabbled during the following years, and along came Artist Studio Tours. During one of my tours, I connected with Tracey Williams and began classes to learn everything I could about the various acrylic mediums as well as developing my technique. Most recently, I rekindled my love with chalk pastels.

My art is inspired by scenes in nature and landscapes and is characterized by attention to detail and realism. In contrast, fluid art explores the unpredictability of paint, allowing the colours to merge and flow in organic patterns. I enjoy melding these two styles.

Painting landscapes, flora and fauna allows me to share the beauty and tranquility of nature with others. Through my art, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the serene moments it offers.

I am a talented, dedicated and resourceful educator with a proven 30-year track record of delivering quality service. Well trained in academia, I am a practicing artist and craftsman, with good management and organisational skills.

I enjoy painting aspects of Barbadian culture in acrylics and mixed media. However, more recently I have been focusing on the marine environment to draw attention to its beauty and fragility in hopes of bolstering preservation efforts. Textile design and manipulation and various handicrafts are also favoured. Bespoke greeting cards and small tote bags are some of my specialty crafts.

Among the local and international exhibitions I’ve participated in, the most memorable was representing Barbados in the International Small Prints Exhibition and Competition in France in 2006. There I won 3rd place from among 465 international printmakers. My artwork has been featured on the front covers of the 2021/22 Barbados telephone directories. I have also painted three murals in excess of 25’ long and currently facilitate fun and engaging paint parties for children and adul

I am a self-taught artist. I have exhibited in more than 50 solo and group exhibition, most recently in "I sing my song" at the Grey Gallery, Owen Sound, Canada in May 2024. I love to experiment with materials and techniques. I work with mixed media and collage—where magpie bits and pieces, each with their own history, combine to form a new narrative. Currently I am working with encaustic—painting with molten wax, where wax and fire combine to give a unique lustre to the surface.

Nicola Blades is an artist born, raised and currently living in Barbados. She graduated from Barbados Community College in 2015 with an associates degree in Visual Arts. In 2018 she graduated from The University For The Creative Arts in England with a bachelors degree in Illustration. She then returned to Barbados where she has been working full-time as a freelance artist ever since. Having worked with watercolours consistently for 15 years, it is her preferred medium. Nicola also works in a variety of other media such as gouache, acrylic and digital painting. Barbados is the heart of all of Nicola’s work, finding ways to weave it into anything she makes. Common themes in her paintings include nostalgia, fears, and things she thinks are funny. She has recently formed a keen interest in documenting her surroundings, especially seascapes, as climate change and unfettered development alter Barbados’ natural landscape. Nicola hopes to expand on this theme as time goes on.

Kris Choy (née Wilkins) was born in Guyana , South America where she studied art to Advanced level at school. She moved to Barbados in 1980 where she raised her daughter and began painting during an “empty nest” syndrome . From there she developed her art by participating in workshops in USA and Barbados , learning skills in pastels, oil paints, “plein air” painting, as well as collage techniques and watercolours and encaustics (which is painting with wax of different colors).

This affords her the opportunity to paint outdoors and savour the nuances of the landscape and the swift changes of light and weather conditions. More recently, she found acrylics and fell in love with the versatility of the medium .

She feels it is important to record places as they are now, since in this rapidly changing world, the future generations will see how beautiful their world was before all the construction and industry.

Her body of work includes landscape, figurative, portraiture and Impressionism.

She has displayed her work at Festival art shows , and galleries in Barbados.

Kris’s work is held in many private collections in different parts of the world.

I am a Barbadian born in Jamaica to a Jamaican mother and a Barbadian father. I started my artistic training locally at Queens College and then moved on to achieve a degree in Textile Design at the University of Brighton in the UK.

For many years I was self employed as a printed textile designer for the US swimwear market. Having spent that time being constrained to a strict design format I shrugged off that title and got busy discovering a more whimsical style, painting anything I wanted to, including numerous very-still-lifes during lockdown, a snowcone cart, a surfboard, 2 lifesized fiberglass cows, 2 mini-buses and a portrait of a garden in France.

Recently I’ve gotten obsessed with collecting vintage ceramic shards that I find in the very dirt of Barbados while walking all over the island. I have these broken bits of the past and created brand new artwork that’s also already 200 years old.

I paint what I experience in the spaces and places I pass through in the journey of my life. The impressions that are left with me are translated onto canvas and paper, using intuition, expressed in a variety of marks to reflect textures, colours, and movement.

Art is my joy and my life, and I hope my work brings joy into your space.

Suzanne Davis

Suzanne Davis was born in Barbados in December 1958.

She met the great Artist Indrani Wittingham at a Rotary function at the Gallery of Caribbean Art. Indrani suggested to her to join her art classes and really enjoyed being trained by Indrani for several years, until Indrani moved to Canada. She painted in oils at that time.

She has done several workshops with the Canadian and Barbados artist Heidi Berger, who exposed her to acrylic painting which she loved and changed her method of painting to acrylic at that time.

She then joined the popular “Love of Art Paint Group” which is tutored by Barbadian Artist Tracey Williams who is an amazing artist and tutor.

Suzanne, over the years, has changed from Oils to Acrylics and poured paints. She loves to paint all forms of nature abstractly. Especially flowers, animals, dancers, under the ocean scenes and family paintings.

She uses high flow and mixed media methods to create very vibrant coloured paintings.

I was born on the Island of Trinidad, I grew up in a family where being creative was a way of life. My Uncle was a very successful Architect and Artist, my Aunt an Artist and a cousin a talented designer of Carnival costumes, so from a very young age I have loved vibrant colors and movement, and finding different ways to be creative. I did art at school but I am basically a self taught artist. I have exhibited in quite a few group exhibitions and my work can be found in private collections both here and abroad.

My work is a constant search for the best way to interpret the ideas that I have about myself, our culture and the beauty and colors of the island Barbados where I now live and paint. I do not limit myself to any one medium or concept, and I try take advantage of as many workshops as I can to learn different techniques to be able to make my art more pleasing to my heart.. Each piece I create is both an extension of my past and where I have come from blended with a preview of where I want to go. I work mainly in Acrylics, but have worked in Oils, wax resist, encaustic and resin.

My ultimate desire is for the person standing and looking at one of my pieces to feel the same joy and happiness that I felt in creating the piece.

The artist in me was born on my eighth Christmas when I got the gift I was praying for all year—a shiny, new, watercolor paint set.

Now I could roam the trails and fields of our neighborhood with sketchpad and paints in hand, stopping to capture anything that caught my eye—fruit hanging from trees, birds in flight, and the cavorting of the neighbourhood sheep and goats.

My talent was raw, and friends jokingly called my paintings “abstract,” but my high school art teacher saw potential in me and took me under her wing. She taught me how to paint, using colour to express feeling and create mood. She was Alison Chapman-Andrews, the well-known Barbadian painter, my first mentor, and someone who still inspires me today.

My landscapes are inspired by the rugged cliffs of Ragged Point, the majestic dunes of Chalky Mount and the churning waves of Shark Hole. As a member of Plein Air Barbados (a group of amateur and professional artists), I have the pleasure of discovering these and similar places, and experiencing a oneness with nature which I seek to express in my art.

I’m an acrylic artist, choosing acrylics for their appearance and versatility. I usually start a canvas by underpainting, using a first coat of monochrome colour to sketch the composition. This allows me to position the highlights, reflections and shadows before the top colours are blended and applied. This creates an appearance of depth not easily attained otherwise.

Since discovering my passion many years ago, I’ve been constantly trying new techniques. Consequently, I’ll be experimenting with splattering, pouring and stippling methods in the near future, hoping to achieve innovative effects which I’ll showcase in upcoming works.

It is my pleasure to share my gift with you. I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoy creating it.

Creativity has always been a part of my life from a very young age. My grandmother painted, flower arranged and embroidered the most beautiful dresses when we were growing up. I, myself first took my artistic interests seriously when I was introduced to photography in my latter years at secondary school, but it was not until I decided to leave the shores of Barbados in my twenties to travel that I finally followed my dream to make my hobby into a full time career.

I spent 6 years in England were I pursued my photography and continued to degree level in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, specializing in Illustration.

It was during this time in England being away from my home that I truly appreciated the peacefulness and beauty of Barbados. I often drive around the island taking photographs, sketching and gathering information.

From this information I paint, draw and create images that capture a feeling of the people and their land. I love colour and when painting and illustrating I use bold colours, quick strokes and simple shapes to capture a feeling. It is in this simplicity that the beauty of what I see is reflected.

Julianne Gill is a visual artist and interior designer whose Barbadian parents raised her in Australia. There she studied fine arts for a year at Curtin University, then switched to interior design and decoration at TAFE.

During a trip to visit family in Barbados in 2001, she was offered a job with Designers Choice and ended up working there for five years. She was then approached by Archers Hall Design Centre, and began working with them on both commercial and residential properties, most of them high end. In both firms, she was commissioned to paint murals, design furniture and create paintings.

Julianne opened Studio J in 2010, in order to develop a design niche for a contemporary, clean-lined aesthetic with a more individual look, and to focus more energy on painting, which is her passion.

As an experienced designer, she specializes in providing personalized interiors which can incorporate both natural elements and commissioned artworks.

Long accustomed to using acrylics, she now employs additional media such as inks, encaustics and resin to explore colour and geometries. Julianne’s process often involves many layers of pushing the paint on and pulling it back to reveal complex layers and patterns.

Julianne’s work explores the shapes and layers of nature, using plants, the land, sea and even ethereal landscapes as subject matter. It is usually abstract and intuitive. Her modern botanical series is influenced by the vibrancy and colour of island living in Barbados.

Julianne Gill works from her home studio in Apes Hill, St. James, Barbados. She is the mother of two small children, enjoys the challenge of work-life balance.

One-of-a kind pieces that contrast either in texture or colour, beautifully hand-crafted from 100% Bajan clay.

As a clay artist, I have always used my medium to relax and just enjoy the ride. No hidden meanings, no stories, just wanting to create something that makes one feel good when its seen and touched. I often adopt the phrase “less is more". I usually start with something simple and expand to something unique. Experimenting with different techniques, exploring the possibilities to find the right fit, all while also testing my own boundaries. It’s that journey that allows me to transfer my thoughts onto the piece.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

My interest in pottery first started in April 2002, when my sister gave me a gift of pottery classes which helped to release the stress that came with my hectic work and home life. Truth be told, I have not looked back since. Under the watchful eye of Gloria Chung at the Barbados Community College, I was encouraged to find and release whatever hidden talent I may have. The satisfaction gained from turning raw clay into a work of art, or a functional piece is truly rewarding. I embrace the unpredictable and love to throw on the wheel, but recently I’ve taken to hand-building pieces for a different perspective. I’ve found that merging both methods allows my imagination to truly run wild. Working with contrasts, whether glaze colours or textures, along with my attention to detail gives my pieces that edge! Creating vessels and art pieces offers me more scope to experiment. I endeavour to offer my clients their own ‘one-of-a-kind personal pieces’. This challenges me as an artist to never duplicate my work. Much of my personality appears in my work, so when you acquire an MCG (Michelle’s Clay Gallery) piece, you have a part of me.

Trained as an architect, Jamila found her passion for pottery amidst the daily routine of the office. She makes hand-built pottery and allows the inherent beauty of the clay to speak for itself. In her recent work, she mixes white and red earthenware to create a palette of earth tone colours.

Her process is one of collaboration with the material; rather than imposing strict control, she embraces the clay’s natural tendencies. Through her work, Jamila offers a meditative reflection on the beauty of the natural environment, inviting viewers to explore the tactile and visual contrasts of the unglazed ceramic surfaces.

This award winning artist fell in love with the manipulation of fabric at the age of 14. She has since evolved into someone who is constantly seeking new ways to push the limits of her medium.

The surface design techniques she employs Include tie dye, batik, hand painting, three dimensional embroidery, fabric collage, fabric sculpture, applique, reverse applique, embroidery and many more.

This self taught artist is inspired by Barbados’ beautiful landscape and the fragments of our rich African heritage which have survived and frequently expressed these ideas in clothing ,home decor items , wall hangings and sculpture.

She pushes the boundaries of her medium when she crafts pieces for exhibition and therefore makes a point to enter shows held at many of the island's art galleries.

I am an artist, art educator and passionate photographer. I was born in Berlin, Germany. I studied Fine Arts/Photography at the University of Art (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst) in Leipzig and worked as a freelance photographer and as a photo-editor for a daily newspaper (TAZ) in Berlin, Germany. About 30 years ago, I made beautiful Barbados my home, and have worked as the art teacher of the Codrington School, the International School of Barbados, for the last 19 years. During these years, I have taught students in their Primary years, Middle years and at Diploma level. Many NIFCA awards were achieved by my students during these years. I have also run many art workshops and art-and-craft camps for children, and have created large 3-dimensional artworks on plywood for children to touch (so called Sensory Boards) for the Barbados Children's Development Centre and Children's Homes, to be used in occupational therapy. In the late 90ies until 2000, I did run with a friend a small art gallery and art-and-craft-shop in Baystreet, called the Perseverance House of Art. I am the co-author of the journalistic photo-book Gefuehl und Schaerfe, Fotos fuer die TAZ, Rixdorfer Verlagsanstalt 1982 (Germany) and the author of Picture Science, Using Digital Photography to Teach Young Children, Redleaf Press 2007 (USA). My book Picture Science won the prestigious 2007 Directors' Choice Award and the Judges' Selection Award from Early Childhood News (USA). In 2013 I received the ECIS (European Council of International Schools) Award for the Promotion of International Education. I am an active participant and member of the Barbados Photographic Society.

Now retired, I do have the time to focus on my very own creative endeavors and to actively follow my life-long interest in Fine Art Photography and Painting. I especially love Black-and-White Photography, and I have loved to draw and paint since childhood. I mostly work with acrylic paints on canvas (but also on paper or other surfaces), and I love to explore the endless opportunities of mixing and combining different media, including the use of objects. I am also very interested in Intuitive Painting, and strongly believe in the healing powers of art. Art is my Life-Line.

In Early 2014 I found myself deeply immersed in my renewed love for Art.

Mario Holder is a Barbadian Artist whose work is express mainly through the medium of acrylic on canvas .

His work is inspired mostly by the Natural world, to be more specific plants, humans amongst Natural landscapes.

In 2013 , The whole trajectory of my life shifted after Breaking my neck and damaging my spinal cord , the recovery and healing became my number concern and part of that process included healing not just on a physical level but also emotionally.

Painting played a huge role on getting that stuck unexpressed stress out and it brought me back into a feeling of safety and confidence back into my life.

The desire to just be, in nature, in a forest somewhere was what my body and mind craved the most and while i couldn't physically be there in found that i could create that feeling in my own mind and i could bring what was on my mind on to canvas.

I am originally from Britain and although in recent years I have spent much of my time in Barbados I have recently relocated here permanently and paint predominantly in acrylics from my studio in Holetown. I am hugely motivated by the beauty of the surroundings here in Barbados and much of my current work is inspired by the vibrant natural world around me.

My work has been shown at art exhibitions in London and Hertfordshire and I have sold to art enthusiasts in the UK. My work has also been included in an exhibition with a group of other artists at The Gallery of Caribbean Art.

I produce original paintings and also sell my art printed onto both greetings cards and practical yet beautiful products for the home.

II have been a hand-builder since 2000, making my artwork with coils of clay or rolled slabs. I create work that shares stories of Barbados, my environment, and more importantly of being a Caribbean woman. My current body of work speaks to the centuries’ old tradition of generational pottery-making and conveying stories of my Afro- Caribbean cultural heritage. Clay is generational, transformational, and archival.

I have won numerous National Awards, and currently have two large-scaled public commissioned artworks in the National Collection- “Peltin’ Bare Big Rocks” and “Ichirouganaim to 1834” in the Golden Square Freedom Park in Historic Bridgetown.

I started painting after I moved from England to Barbados. I love all mediums so l mostly mixed them all together. I am not interested in spending time recreating my surroundings which are already perfectly visual. I like to create from whatever pops into my head, I do weirdly tend to paint a lot of dead people! to keep my memory of them alive, people that have brought me joy through their own artistic abilities.
I love all mediums and I am still learning, I love alcohol ink and the unique way it moves on the paper.  I like to use Recycled glass when possible in my mixed media pieces. I just love my studio space, to be able to be creative, make a mess, store and collect cool things and express myself artistically.

I have no theme to my art, I just go with whatever makes me smile, my studio is my happy place, come visit.

I am a creative, passionate about all artforms which I gain great pleasure and inspiration from.

My own work has evolved through experimentation and exploration of colour, texture and pattern, always on a journey of discovery of how to connect these elements together in my paintings.

I often work from imagination which gives me the freedom to express myself without having any particular outcome in mind or placing any restrictions on a specific style.

Nature and portraits are themes I love to interpret in my own way to encounter different ways to portray feelings and emotions.

Russell Padmore is a bajan musician, diy-er, and visual artist. Upon meeting his wife-to-be Lauren, he joined in on her passion for jewelry design and they started a jewelry and home stylings brand (Element L Barbados). Russell added fine art as the third element to the brand “to beautify spaces as jewelry beautifies the body”.

Russell looks to combine elements of island-life with modern minimalism , with an emphasis on texture. Be it the coarseness of beach sand, the wrinkle of linen or the rigidity of coral.

He steps outside of the usual paint and canvas by adding structural media such as wood, fabric, clay and plaster, creating pieces that are both painting and sculpture.

Russell has been creating fine art for personal collection, sale and by commission since the pandemic. He has showcased selections at several establishments as recently as late 2023 at Roundhouse Barbados.

ARTIST SIAN PAMPELLONNE paints with raw emotion and vivid colours, captivating the viewer through mixed media paintings with acrylics and three dimensional pieces.

As an artist she is entirely tactile. Everything becomes immersed in the process — hands, fingers, the kitchen spatula, even a random piece of cardboard that happens to be near. Found objects of glass from shattered windscreens, abandoned Lego blocks, empty shotgun cartridge shells, fabrics, beads, buttons and more become a part of the stories she tells.

Sian doesn’t paint in the traditional, realistic style. Instead she looks for what lies underneath the facade. Her work processes circumstances, history and feelings by painting subjects against the backdrop of the world that in turn envelops them. Each one of her pieces is about growth and discovery. The addition of the three dimensional found objects become an integral fragment of the story.

“I hope that my encounters with the world which I put on canvas are thought provoking, and tell a story that pulls the viewer in. My wish for my work is that it has allowed you to stop and think.”

Sian’s recognizable artworks adorn the walls of many local and international collectors, each one a piece of her story that will never quite be purged from her innately creative spirit.

My paintings are vibrant and joyous, a reflection of who I am and my life in the Caribbean.

I’m Margaret Nock Rodriguez ...

a Trini who has chosen to live in sunny Barbados;

a retired interior architect, creative planner, traveller and collector of “treasures”

My Artistic Education

I was interested in art and architecture from young and started my watercolour journey using a dry brush technique enhanced with pen doodles. Participating in many workshops in Barbados and overseas has been valuable opportunities to paint with other artists, share ideas and learn from constructive criticism. As an interior architect I developed excellent planning skills, knowledge of structures and attention to detail, talents which, together with my creativity, have stood me in good stead for mastering this challenging medium.

My Artistic Journey

Meeting Canadian artist Margaret Roseman was the turning point in my watercolour journey. She taught me the value of using artist quality materials; how to manipulate big brushes with lots of water; what “letting it flow” meant; negative painting and the importance of light and white paper. Harry Bryden introduced me to the benefits of glazing. Heidi Berger sparked my creative juices, challenging me to experiment with new techniques and want to paint, paint, paint!

My Artistic Awards and Rewards

I won my first art prize in kindergarten and have been honoured to receive many awards since. Regretfully I wasn’t diligent in recording these notable achievements. My private commissions, landscapes, florals, quaint chattel houses and detailed renderings of prominent buildings are hanging in private collections worldwide. The satisfaction of completing a painting then having someone admire and choose to display my art in their home or office has been the most valuable of rewards in my art career.

My Artistic Life

I am inspired by what I see, how I feel and the zillions of images and ideas spinning in my head. Having creative time is a luxury in my life. Despite the myth that watercolour is the hardest medium to master, for me, painting with watercolours is pure enjoyment - relaxing and full of surprises. When my paintbrush touches the paper, anything can happen. It’s quite exciting learning to accept and even welcome the unexpected.

I retired young due to a degenerative condition, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and I am now considered legally blind. I turned this potential career-ending condition into an opportunity to travel, enjoying a variety of cultural and artistic adventures, over the past few years. These experiences, combined with my shrinking field of vision, have challenged me to experiment with other mediums including acrylics, mixed media, collage, mosaics, and pottery and to embrace my newest passion - teaching. Sharing my love and knowledge of watercolours; encouraging my students to “play” not just paint; seeing them gain confidence developing important foundation skills; and nurturing their creativity to try techniques outside their comfort zone, gives me immense pleasure.

While my Trini “joie de vie” continues to be reflected in my vivid colours, my recent works reflect a less structured, increasingly abstract impressionistic style. With very few active painting years remaining, I strive to keep the rainbows in my imagination vivid and alive in my artworks.

“ART is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Edgar Degas

Stephen started carving in Barbados as a teenager. Entirely self-taught he was soon winning awards for his work in mahogany at the National Cultural Foundation’s Crop Over Visual Arts exhibition and their annual NIFCA festival.

After moving to London in 2001 he trained at Camberwell College of Arts and went on to study historic wood carving at the City & Guilds of London Art School.

Stephen has had a varied career, combining tuition with his own studio work. As a tutor he has run classes at London’s Good Life Centre and on the Greek island of Vasiliki for Woodcarvers Greece. He enjoys helping others to learn wood carving just as much as he gets satisfaction producing his own work.

At home in Chancery Lane, Stephen is a keen gardener. He says he is glad to be able to sit carving in the open air instead of holed up in an English workshop! Most of his work is carved from Barbados mahogany and from English oak and lime. Today he is also experimenting with less traditional woods like that of the local neem tree.

She has become very creative with her finishes - all hand painted some with decoupage, splatter finish also transfers. She is happy to take personalized orders. She sells her work at Holders Market on Sunday mornings and at local fairs.

British born Julia is a true island woman, who draws inspiration from the local landscape, traditional buildings and life we see around us.

She uses a colorful palette usually working with acrylic paint but in recent times she has developed an individual style using encaustic, and also the wax resist method. The subtle movement of colour using inks and hot wax is fascinating to work with and produces a unique style. As well, she has taken printing courses at Gainsborough House (UK) - mono, lithography, Japanese Wood Block, screen printing.

A member of the Barbados Arts Council she has exhibited at many shows here on the island and her work can be found in private collections in Barbados, USA, Canada, Germany and the UK.

Dana was always what you’d call artistically inclined. Her earliest memory from the age of three is studying the way weed grass swayed in the wind or the way a wood dove cooed. Her mother encouraged her to dance freely in front of crowds or make-believe other worlds out in the garden while her father taught her about trees and adventure. She eventually went on to pursue her first love and study Fine Art at university, and subsequently obtained her teaching degree.

She gave priority to teaching for some years and had two beautiful children along the way, but a professional painting career always beckoned, patiently waiting its turn, simmering and maturing.

She begins her process with a photo, preferring to use ones she’s taken herself. Her favourite medium is oil paint that is thick and versatile. She always starts with an undercoat which gives a unifiying effect to the painting. Even if most is painted over, she likes how little bits of that first colour sometimes peak out at the end.

For subject matter she still enjoys finding the unusual views and perspectives she was drawn to as a child, the overlooked, or the underappreciated, and making them beautiful. By doing so she can give these things a voice and then share that voice with her viewers. Her favourite subjects are weeds, trees and old buildings.

I am a multimedia, multidisciplinary artist and curator.

I capture / I paint / I draw / I write / I garden / I cook / I create installations / I put things together.

I use the materials at my disposal to convey my ideas, thoughts and responses to events that move me.

Experiencing and sharing these experiences are tantamount for the development of humanity and it cements our interdependence. I try to express those.

A lot of my work focuses on emotions and feelings, the unseen. I am very interested in energy. It is the exchange of energy that governs the interaction of all beings, with others and the environment.

Very important to my practice is the exploration of the ideas of love and respect.

Essentially I see myself as an aspiring artist! By investing the time, I will improve and enhance my unique expression.  My goal is to enrich my artwork by constantly being involved in the creative process: by researching, practicing, observing, repeating, I am developing skills everyday and growing over time; all the while articulating my inner voice!

My love of outdoor painting serves as a vehicle to propel my artistic interest and enthusiasm for the visual arts. Visiting various landscapes throughout the island-from River Bay in St Lucy in the north to Nelson Street in the city capital of Bridgetown ~ has allowed me to come into my own expressionistic style. My portfolio contains seascapes, wildflower super-blooms, turtles and my signature “Bodega Series” of still-lifes which depict ingredients for favourite recipes.

Born and raised in Barbados, I have been keen on art from my days at The Christ Church Foundation School. I then pursued Fine Arts at The Barbados Community College; after which, I studied Interior Design at the International Fine Arts College in Miami, Florida. In 2015, a deep interest in visual arts began to blossom and then flourish when I attended the National Cultural Foundation’s En Plein Air Workshops which were tutored by Barbadian master artists.

Awards: Design South Magazine. BIMEX Best in Home Show. BIMEX Best in Use of Products (Home Show). NIFCA Bronze.

Shows: Barbados Arts Council; The Crane Art Gallery; Drift Ocean Lounge; Round House; BIBA Charity Group Show; Argentine Embassy; Andromeda Gardens; Artsplash; Caribbean Gallery of Art; Senses Marche

As a visual artist, making art is something I’ve always done.  Family inspired it.  Tutors taught it and led the way.  I learned many techniques and was privileged to make it an important part of my life.  Art defines me with the many exhibitions I’ve had in many Canadian cities as well as in Barbados.  The two worlds blend together because colour, shape and form are everywhere.

As my practice evolves, I now enjoy the simplification of that colour, shape and form allowing the viewer some time to find what they see in the painting.  Some time for themselves.  And that’s very important for me.  Viewers find my work very happy, joyful and comfortable to live with.  How lucky we are that art can do that for us.

After having had the challenge, joy and satisfaction of creating and producing a work of art, it now becomes time for the viewer to join my world.  It’s a wonderful one and I hope this world is shared with me.

Each piece is unique, food safe for functional daily use and sophisticated in design. Working by hand enables Ashanti to draw out the natural grain of the wood and finish each piece to smooth perfection.

The bespoke collection include bowls incorporating other media such as epoxy, leather and wire, that are stunning center-pieces, showcasing master craftmanship in design, color and texture of especially mahogany wood, which will stand the test of time as favorite creations and exclusive work of art.

Yasmin Vizcarrondo was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1958. Barbados became her home since 1998.She received an early introduction into the world of art by her late grandfather, a German immigrant, with a rich artistic inclination. She remembers seeing him painting daily, he took her to paint outdoors, and to the city’s galleries. The many moments spent together have definitely influenced Yasmin’s artwork. Here in Barbados, her painting has transformed from something casual to a way of life. This island has motivated and inspired Yasmin in unimaginable ways. In 2009, she joined Indrani Whittingham’s art group sessions. This started her “re-encounter” with art, it created an explosion in her senses, perceiving more vividly the extraordinary colors and images of the Caribbean. She uses oils and acrylics , loose brush strokes and palette knife, portraying her unique painterly and impressionistic style.Plein air is her favorite way of painting, something she has inherited from her grandfather, who loved the outdoors and who never painted from photographs. Her first Solo exhibition, called “Loving Barbados “, was in 2014. This first exhibition was dedicated to the memory of her granddad, Hugo Matthes, who loved and painted Barbados too.

My paintings are a reflection of the environment surrounding me so therefore my art represents everything that I see, feel and experience. My aim in painting my subjects is to capture the beauty of the moment. I enjoy painting the everyday things, the things we miss or don't take notice of, yet, the familiar things that should give us pleasure. Therefore, my aim is for the viewer to experience, get lost, and be moved by that moment. I believe that it's in these small details that we get a glimpse of the Creator.

I prefer working with acrylic paints but sometimes use other mediums like wax resist. Iʼve recently been captivated by different textures and have been experimenting with various acrylic mediums and organic objects to achieve the desired effect I want. I'm also using my palette knife more as it not only gives the desired texture to my paintings but the feathery like results are most desirous for moving figures, and gives that Impressionist effect to some of my paintings. This quote by Pierre- Auguste Renoir sums up my feelings about my art.

“The magic of the sun transmutes the palm trees into gold, the water seems full of diamonds and men become the kings from the East.” Pierre - Auguste Renoir

Laura Ward was born in Venezuela, a fascinating place where ancient Arawak artisans left behind traces of their existence. My work has been a journey since I encountered the clay for the first time in my life, and I fell in love with the Amerindian Pots. The process of creation is very intimate in the life of an artist - part of the inspiration offered by a vessel and the landscape that surrounds me. Creating my work begins with the modelling of a vessel, followed by the application of different techniques such as impressing, incising, inlay, burnish, paint with metal oxides and firing in an electric kiln, using a cone 5 for a period of nine hours, in which the God of fire performs his magical work transforming the pieces into work of art. She migrated to Barbados in 1991 and has since become known there for her Amerindian-style ceramics. In addition to creating one-of-a-kind pieces, she also manufactures lines of ceramics products at Earth and Fire Studio which she founded in 1994. Each of these pieces is made with love and dedication and depicts Barbadian architecture and culture.

Tracey Williams is a Barbadian Artist ,educated at the Ursuline Convent and the Barbados Community College in the Fine Arts Division where she was awarded most outstanding student.

In 1995 Tracey pursued her lifelong ambition of being an artist, she had the opportunity and privilege to train and work in the studios of Alison Chapman – Andrews and to be apprentice of the renowned Stanley Greaves. Through this experience she found her own philosophy and developed and refined her technical skills.

The artist diversity is in the medium of acrylic and oil; her strength is demonstrated in the flower paintings for which she is known. In addition, she has created paintings directly from models. Williams’ work has a magical romantic spiritual element with an erotic under current.

Tracey followed her dreams and aspirations and now is the co-owner of a retail store called the Art Hub Barbados, Inc.

Empowering Artistic Expression

An Introduction to Our Special Needs Art Studio Program

Established in 2006, The Schoolhouse for Special Needs Inc. (The Schoolhouse) is a private institution dedicated to serving students with learning and developmental challenges. Our students benefit from a serene and nurturing environment that provides the ideal setting for their growth and success. The Art Studio is a vibrant and inspiring space where young adults can express themselves creatively and develop their artistic skills.

In the Art Studio, our artists engage in the intricate and rewarding process of creating beautiful paintings, typically using acrylics on canvas. Each piece is a labour of love, reflecting the unique perspectives and experiences of our artists. Many of the paintings depict scenes of life in Barbados or themes drawn from the artists' personal thoughts and surroundings.

The creative journey in our Art Studio is supported by attentive teacher guidance, ensuring that each artist can fully explore their artistic potential. Once completed, the original artworks are often reproduced on a variety of tangible products, including mugs, tote bags, and prints. These items make perfect gifts for any occasion, be it birthdays, Christmas, or simply a thoughtful gesture.

Sales from these paintings and products not only help sustain the Art Studio but also provide our artists with a source of income, fostering a sense of independence and self-worth. The proceeds are used to pay commissions to the artists and to restock supplies, ensuring the continuity of this empowering program. Through their art, our artists are able to share their talents with the broader community, enriching both their lives and those around them.

Considering the unique needs of our artists and the extended time required to meticulously complete each painting, we kindly request special consideration regarding the maximum number of submissions. Due to the nature of their abilities, each artist is unable to comfortably produce multiple pieces within a single academic year.
